When I bought my first domain, the only thing I knew about building an online business was the need to buy domain and hosting to park my domain name. I realized that this knowledge was not enough. Find a niche

The first thing you need to do before you build your website is to find the right niche. Your niche could be your hobby, expertise, work or something you or someone close to you know about.

This is very important as your website and your online business will be built based on your niche.

For example your niche is selling cookies therefore your website will be about cookies. You can’t have a website talking about building a house and yet you are selling cookies. People will get confused and maybe there are people who think you are crazy.

Therefore when you have decided on the niche for example selling cookies, you will start to plan building your website around your niche i.e. how to make mouth-watering cookies, how to make healthy cookies that children love etc.

Everything you talk about in your website will be about cookies.

Buy a domain

After you have decided on your niche, you need to find a name for your website. The domain that you are going to buy will use this name. Your domain will look something like this ‘http://www.yourdomainname.com’ The best is to have a catchy and easy-to- remember name so people could remember your product. They may not buy your product the first time they go into you website. However they will be able to remember the name and once they need the product that you sell, they will type in your domain name.

For example if you are selling cookies, you could name your website ‘crispycookie.com’. Another thing about giving a right name to your domain is that people will generally know what your business is just by looking at your domain name.

Hosting to park your domain

When you already have a domain, you will need a host to park your domain. Think of your host this way, your domain is the signboard for your shop while hosting is your shop where you keep your product for sale. The only difference is that instead of keeping physical products there, you are keeping your product review, how your product could help people etc. In other words, you are keeping information of your product in your host.

FTP

FTP is short for file transfer protocol. As the name suggests, you can use it to transfer files from your computer to the network such as the internet, transferring files from the internet to your computer or transferring your files to another computer vice versa.

The process of transferring the file is called uploading and downloading. If you transfer a file from your computer over to the internet for example FTP site then the process is called uploading. If you transfer a file over from the internet to your computer then the process is called downloading.

For those who ask what a FTP site is; FTP site is something like a large filing cabinet only this filing cabinet will be in a central server computer.

Because I like to promote products using product-centric keywords, I really like the review site. This can be used for PPC or driving traffic organically. Because I am not a fan of PPC, I prefer the latter.

Review sites historically convert very well and if you combine them with product centric keywords, a review site will convert very well regardless if you make one yourself or if you use software.

In his videos, Cam shows and example of a product review site selling vacuum cleaners from CJ and all have the affiliate link so I found it a nice tool because I just simply can’t make sites or wordpress blogs very well. I can never get them to format the way I want them to.

Step 4) Create An Instant Wordpress blog

I found this tool to be really helpful because as I said earlier, I like the Niche Marketing on ***** method but am not very good at building wordpress sites.

I can do them but it takes me a lot longer than I would like. It always seems that my text is running into the sidebar or by ad on the sidebar is overlaping
text.

So the idea is to “stack” all of these sites around a niche. For example, you are promoting the Xbox 360 and you have found a lot of keywords you want to use.

You would then go through these steps for all of your keywords and you would have quite a bit of content out there in your niche with the idea of becoming an authority in your niche.

I am going to use this software to promote my Niche Marketing On ***** type keywords so that I can build more sites. I do want to say that this is not a get rich quick scheme. All of those sales letters that promise a Ferrari and a yacht with 30 minutes of work aren’t realistic. There is work involved no matter what you method you chose to earn your money online. I prefer to use software whenever I can to cut down on my work

And in order to earn money, you have to create a website.

I think that the best way to create a website is by using Joomla or php.Nuke. The advantage of these scripts is that they allow you to create an interactive site, a membership site, a community, a forum, etc. but it would be too difficult to use these scripts for the Internet marketer newbie ; so we will talk through creating your new website with a simple .html or .php template.

First of all, be organized: create a file in your computer called “weight loss” and add sub-files where you will store your files: images, articles, etc. This way you will find your documents when you will need some of them.

Select the subject of your niche site. It is recommended to focus on a subject that you know very well: a hobby or a passion. Choose the name of your new website – which will be also become your domain name. For example, if you plan to create a site dedicated to weight loss, choose a name like “weight loss guide” or something related.

Once you have your new site and domain name, select a template, some pictures, a header… in order to personalize your site.

As soon as you will have uploaded these files – template, images, header – write your first article which will be an introduction to your site. Introduce yourself, talk about your passion and inform your potential visitors that your site will be regularly updated.

Create a blog dedicated to your website. Each time you will add an article to your niche site, you will also post a description on your blog, include a link to the new article and ping your post.

Now that you have content on your site, you may add your AdSense blocks.

Here are some tips to maximise your AdSense earnings:

* Do not use the AdSense 486×60 sized ad as it is generally ignored.

* Embed your AdSense codes IN your content area (for example, let it float on the right or on the left of your text).

* Preferably use AdSense 300×250 or 250×250 sized ads.

* Use colors that match with your site or simply use black AdSense ads (they must not look as a simple block of ads).

* If you have written a very large article, put up to three AdSense blocks on your page.

* Check your page title and meta description in order to have relevant AdSense ads on your page.

* Change your page title to reflect exactly your page’s subject.

* Track the number of clicks on your Google AdSense blocks and change their design if necessary.

It is recommended that you write your articles yourself but If you have difficulties to write an article yourself, you can write the principal lines of your article and then make a search to find similar websites. Select some articles that talk about the same subject than yours and pick up some ideas or sentences that you will rewrite with your own words and add to your own article.

If you are a very bad writer, you may choose to buy private label rights articles or make a search on your favorite search engine for the best articles directories.

Apart from the time spent looking for the elusive money-making “long tail keywords” with plenty of search results, you then need to find out if it is worth competing with others. Yes, that means another type of research, scoping out the competition level.

Once you have accomplished this, and if you are using Google AdWords to advertise, you will need to find out how much your keyword is going to cost you.

The question then is, after all the time researching, is that wonderful keyword now going to cost you an ungodly amount to use in your AdWords campaign?

Of course, if you have the money you can always pay Wordtracker $59 per month for its full service. Or there is Nichebot ranging from $9.95 to $20 per month. These online tools also have a considerable learning curve before you start using them, so plan on watching instructional videos and reading tutorials before you can start researching.

Then there is Keyword Elite for a one time payment of $176, and also a learning curve.

I live in San Francisco. As such, I have seen Craig’s List grow from a very small list into a worldwide phenomena. In fact, I have spoken with Craig many times (yes there is a real guy named Craig). To some people the Craig’s List web site might look a little complicated. Do this right now, open up another browser window and I will walk you through a few areas of the web site, highlighting the potential free niche marketing options.

* Community *

In the upper left-hand corner is this box. Listed as subheadings are “activities”, “artists”, “general”, “pets”, and others.

The “General” category is an excellent place for any kind of free report or other free promotional activity. Really, anything goes in this category. Having said that, you do not want to post anything in here that mentions a fee or even has prominently displayed fee based services on your landing page. If you do, it will likely get flagged, quickly.

However you can market your free newsletters, free reports, free tele-classes. If you have a niche product that corresponds to one of the subheadings, all the better. For instance if you are promoting a book on dog training, the “ pets” category here could be a gold mine.

* Personals *

You may think “personals” is a total waste of time unless you are looking for a date, however, the “missed connections”, “rants and raves” and “miscellaneous romance” could be a viable place for marketing a free newsletter or free products or relationship tools or similar things. Again, be careful with fee-based products. The Craig’s list community will flag them very quickly.

* Discussion forums *

It speaks for itself. In general, these are focused discussions on an array of topics. Currently there are 72 discussion forums active. The discussions are worldwide, existing on every Craig’s list. Personally, I have not spent much time here, but I bet you could have great success if you found an appropriate niche. These are real-time discussions. (Hmm, I have to try this myself)

* For Sale *

Yes, For Sale. How have you overlooked this before? These are free classified ads going out to thousands and thousands of people interested in what you are selling in every major city in the world. These are focused niche categories. There are many ways to promote products. For instance, there is a “computer” category. Presumably, those that click on this category will be looking to buy a computer or computer related products. What if you wrote an e-book on how to maintain your computer? Sell it here. “Registry Cleaner Affiliate”, sell it here. There are categories like “sports”, “ musical instruments”, “motorcycles”, “general”. Check this out. It is a real goldmine. I still promote FREE stuff here, with the “For Sale” items at the landing page.

* Services *

“Services” is where independent businesses can place free ads. Niches include, “financial”, “legal”, “therapeutic”. This is also a category where you can flat out promote your services. And it is all free.

How to Leverage the Power of Craig’s List.

Craig’s list is operational in hundreds of cities all over the world now. This gives the opportunity to put free ads in front of thousands and thousands of people every day, focused and targeted toward your niche. However, who has the time to post hundreds of advertisements? I certainly do not. And, one thing about the Craig’s list niche marketing strategy – you must post a lot of ads and rotate them regularly.

This is not easy as Craig’s list has duplication flag that will not allow you to post the same message in more than one location or at one time. So, the way around this is to write several different ads. Just change the wording; it is simple. Yet, it takes time. You only have to do it once. It is time well spent.

What I do is write several different ads/postings for different categories.

For example:
I have “Free Stuff” Ads for the Community and other non-sales areas. I have several free reports and several e-mail newsletters. So, I have four or five different versions of each “Free Stuff” Ad.

I have “Paid Products and Services” Ads For the Sale and Services Sections. I also have four or five different versions of several paid products that I list in the “For Sale” and “Services” section. Part of my business is in the therapeutic section.

Every day I have at least 15 to 20 Craig’s list ads targeting specific niches. I generally post in the most populated and active communities. I rotate the ads so as to not set off the duplicate content filters.

Niche Marketing to Craig’s list can be very profitable if it is done correctly. It can also be very time-consuming. It is the type of job you should outsource. Also it takes a while to know exactly how to approach each of these different subgenres.

As someone who has grown up in the Craig’s list community, I have seen the ins and outs of of it for years (since 1997 to be precise) and realize its quirky nature. All of this effort will do no good if your postings get flagged by the community or if your delivery and approach is wrong. You have to be ever vigilant of both when and where to post sales ads and free stuff. You must have specific strategies relative to landing pages. You must have a certain conversational nature to your advances, etc.

Niche marketing to Craig’s list can be an absolute gold mine if done correctly. If done incorrectly, you can waste a lot of time and not see any results.

I received this question a few days ago from one of my subscribers and thought that it was so relevant that I decided to publish my answer here.

I want to say first of all that I believe that there are a few core methods or ways of list building; in fact, I think that there is really only one core method of list building, with perhaps a few variants.

I can see that it might be easy to think that you might build a list of subscribers who would be interested in tangible products in a different way than you might build a list of subscribers, who might be interested in a digital product. I can also see that it might be easy to think that you might build a list of subscribers who would be interested in something to purchase in a different way than you might build a list of nonprofit subscribers, for example.

However, based on my experience with list building, and building several lists, and studying the list building arena online, I have come to the conclusion that there is one basic core model that works consistently time in and time out.

This basic core model involves creating a squeeze page, or a web landing page (the webpage where your visitors go first when they get to your website the first time), and funneling all of your Web traffic to this squeeze page. A squeeze page is named this, because it is designed to “squeeze” a visitor into becoming a subscriber.

A squeeze page’s only purpose is to convince visitors to opt in to the e-mail list. The easiest way to do this, is to offer a free gift of some kind, preferably one relative or related to the particular niche.

Once someone opts in to the e-mail list, then they are directed to the various other parts of the website.

I know that this probably sounds overly simple. However list building is extremely simple. The key element is a squeeze page. You must use a squeeze page to be optimally effective at list building, no matter the niche.

Over the past few months, I’ve seen quite a few fearful sounding forum threads where some people seem incredibly worried about the bad world economy and it’s impact on being able to make a money online.

Well, it’s still possible to find profitable niches…

Sure…there are clearly niche markets that are going to fall off the map in rough financial times. But at the same time, there’s plenty that are going to remain very stable or even do much better during a bad economy.

So how do you go about niche marketing when the economy ***** and everyone’s feeling pain at the pump?

It just takes a shift in thinking…

Consider these 5 key factors:-

1. Niches where people NEED to spend money. In other words…staple products people have to buy regardless of what’s going on. (Example: Students have to buy books for college classes…or people who have health problems they need to spend money on regardless of the economy)

2. Niches where I can help people save money. (Example: VOIP or calling cards to save money on phone bills)

3. Niches where an essential problem needs to be solved or fixed. (Example: People have computer software/hardware problems that need correcting to keep their PC from going kaput)

4. Niches that don’t require people to actually spend money. (Example: Getting an auto quote or signing up for a free credit report service)

5. Niches where people are dealing with any kind of highly emotional or motivational issue that simply overrides anything going on with the economy. (Example: Love, Divorce, Legal Help, etc.)

Bear in mind though, people will also still spend money on non-essential things in a bad economy. You see, the reality is most people are hardly rational about how they spend money, especially when it comes to things they’re highly passionate about.

But if you’re worried at all about the economy and want to “recession proof” your Affiliate Marketing business…make a simple shift in your thinking and consider the motivational factors I listed above when you’re out there niche marketing in a bad economy.

Whatever you do on the net, you will always deal with
Traffic Generation…the holly grail.

To make it short, you have 2 main types of traffic :

1) Search Engine traffic

What is it? : organic traffic coming from search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN

Pros :

- This traffic is free

- Traffic is highly targeted

- Volume of traffic can be very high

Cons :

- you don’t control it

- you rely on robots to analyze your site and deliver some traffic

- you need to get indexed…without being de-indexed (once again, you rely on search engines policy and algorithms)

- short term

2) Referred Traffic

(I know Search engine traffic is also a sort of referred traffic, but let’s put SE traffic apart from this category)

What is it?

Traffic coming from third party sites (other than search engines) and is a result of a “manual / human” action.

Examples : article directories, social bookmarking services,
forums, partners, text link ads, banners, directories, rss…

Pro :

- you control it

- you have a lot of means to develop it

(almost unlimited ; a lot are free)

- it’s highly targeted

- You can pay to get better targeting and control
over your referred traffic

- Long term

Cons :

- Time & resources consuming

- Repetitive tasks

Now, through my membership (Niches-In-A-Box), my forum,
my readings of other forums, I know that most webmasters
mainly rely on search engines traffic, our first category.

The aim of the present article is to throw the light on
a different angle of the Traffic Generation big box!

Summary : the right way to get into traffic generation is
to forget about search engines.

Focusing on search engine traffic gives a too narrow
vision of traffic generation. It does not reveal all
the opportunities existing outside of the search engines
(understand all the way to generate Referred Traffic).

In addition, as you’ve seen from the cons above, you accept
to rely on something you never control, and this is a HUGE
risk in your marketing strategy.

Warning : I do not say, you should not care about search engine
traffic. I say that it should not be your priority, and the first
door you try to open when dealing with traffic generation.
It’s a question of point of view.

Now, on the other hand, focusing on developing what we called
Referred Traffic is a more positive, constructive and profitable
attitude and marketing strategy.

Not only will you build traffic for the long term, but
you will also “manually” control your traffic, either by
submitting your content, your sites, your feeds, or by
exchanging links, content, traffic with partners,
being active on forums, blogs…

Doing it this way will give you a lot of power and effectiveness.
Those sources of Referred Traffic only vanish…if you decide
to let them vanish. Once again, you control everything.

Now, you have some positive side effects :

- By building Referred Traffic, you give a lot of food
to search engines to index your site, understand them,
and rank them well…

- …thus developing naturally your Search Engine Traffic!

Try to develop Referred Traffic by submitting your sitemap to
Google, and you will understand the difference between the
2 approaches

Google and other search engines tend to change their algorithms
quite often to produce more relevant content for users of their
engines. Sometimes, your site is getting de-indexed in a day
just because of this.

Are you lost, is your site dead? It could if you only relied on
Search Engine traffic. It has no impact if you focused on building
Referred Traffic.

In one case, you feel bad and like if you had wasted your time.
In the other case, you don’t even notice it (on the long run ;
of course, you can see a fall in traffic coming from
a given search engine)

But even then, your site has a lot of chances of being re-indexed
when you’ve build Referred Traffic, simply because the search engines
food is still there! And this is a HUGE difference and one of the most
valuable asset you can develop.

If you’re still with me, you should now understand my point : when dealing

Here are 10 easy “pieces” to do what we described above :

Once you have a site…

1) Find some related blogs, read them, identify trends, and post
comments (no stupid comments, no spam of course) with a link
back to your site where you’re also discussing the topic

2) Do the same with related forums. Use search engines (!)
to find relevant forums. Register and start being active
on these forums. Use your signature to put a link back to
your site

3) Create a blog (if you don’t have one) and post on a regular
basis on it. Use a service like feedburner to syndicate your content
with other webmasters.

4) Submit your feeds, blogs, and site to niche directories

5) Find “authority” sites in your niche, analyze them and
contact the webmasters to :

a) propose a link exchange (you should
first put a link to their site),

b) if you’re selling a report or an ebook, propose them
to become an affiliate (give them a fre.e copy of your ebook
first), and make it easy for them to manage their promotion

c) if they have a newsletter, read it, understand it, and then
ask the webmaster if you can have a sponsored ad into it,
or even better a solo ad where you could advertise your site,
newsletter, ebook…

d) propose content exchange with link back to each other’s website

e) build a relation with them

6) The most effective : write articles and submit them to
article directories (some with big traffic, and some niche
related ones)

7) Social bookmarking and social networking :

a) build a Squidoo lens (see Squidoo Profits for more details).
You can find many sites like Squidoo and build pages
about your niche on these ones too. You can link them to your
main niche sites, you can link back to your blogs, or even
to your other “squidoo” like pages, thus creating a “niche social
net” all relevant to your niche.

b) build a myspace account and create a profile around your niche,
then build your “list” of friends around this profile

c) submit your site to social bookmarking services (digg, technorati,
del.icio.us …)

d) You can also comment on the most popular entries with a link
back to your site, blog, or squidoo lens.

Use videos and sites like youtube.com (and similar) to drive
traffic to your niche site. Produce a short video (2-3 minutes)
around your site, your niche and you.
Link to your Videos from your “niche social net” (see 7) )
Also, ask webmasters to put a link to this video (once you
have build a relation with them) – Or they can upload it to
their server and brand it with their affiliate ID, if you have
an affiliate program

9) Make it viral : your best source of
(new) traffic…is your (current) traffic!

Use some “Tell a friend” features on your site to have them
promote your site. You can provide incentives (such as a free
report, a coupon for your ebook…)

10) Paid Traffic : yes…all the above technics do not cost
a penny…(unless you pay for advertising on a partner’s site)

You can pay to get targeted traffic : you can advertise through
text link ads, banners, that will appear on high traffic sites.

You should serioulsy consider paid traffic. Do not see it as
a cost, but rather as an initial investment to boost your site.
Also, if your site is correctly monetized, then paid traffic
is the easiest way to get some quick metrics about this, and
to make it profitable quickly.

As you see we could easily expand this list. But, those are,
in my opinion, the most important sources of Referred Traffic.

Now, compare the above list with Search Engine traffic, and you
will see why your approach should focus on generating Referred Traffic
and not Search Engine Traffic. This type of traffic will come
naturally anyway…

Clickbank is an online marketplace for ebooks and other goods that can be downloaded electronically. I first learnt about Clickbank when I was lured into a data entry scam online. I was pretty desperate for money at the time and would’ve believed anything. I paid my fee to find out how to make money online. The fee was processed by Clickbank. I was then told to make money I should promote this Clickbank product and I would get a commission on products sold. I should have just cut my losses there and then.

I followed the instructions exactly. I set up a Google AdWords campaign and invested more money in an email campaign. I did everything to the letter. Within a couple of days I had made over $200. I felt elated. But guess what? I made no more money and when my Google AdWords bill came through, the whole thing had cost about $400. The cheque took months to arrive and then another month to process.

Since then I have bought many Clickbank products, mainly on how to make money online. I cannot think of one useful thing I have learnt from them. I have tried promoting many of the products as well. With article marketing, PPC, email campaigns and blogs and nothing has worked. I think the market has become oversaturated with Clickbank affiliates. PPC campaigns simply do not make me money anymore, but they cost me a lot.

Many people who create Clickbank products simply want to make a quick buck. They do not care about the affiliates. They are not even that successful themselves. I think if you have a large list of people who trust what you say you may have some luck promoting Clickbank products, but otherwise I wouldn’t waste your time.

On many web savvy web sites it is becoming increasingly
difficult to make money with Google Adsense. Many of the
Google Adsense sites have extremely low click through
rates. This makes it extremely difficult to monetize your
web traffic. In these cases you may way want to consider
monetizing your traffic with affiliate links. You will find
that in some cases the affiliate programs pay as high as
seventy five percent commission and if you make a hundred
dollar sale this works out to seventy five dollars. However
to be successful at affiliate marketing you need to
understand the following basic principles.

The most important principle is that you need to choose

This is easy to do, just go to Google.com type in the subject of your
passion then add the word “forums” to the end, then press the
“Google Search” button.

So for example if you have a passion for Fly Fishing just do a search in Google for “Fly Fishing Forums”.

In less than a second you’ll see at a glance how many forums
there are about your chosen subject. Go ahead and check a few of them out so see how active they are.

It’s these forums where you’ll find all the people who will ultimately become your customers or visitors to your niche market website idea.

If there are none or very few of these forums, just go back to step 1. and brainstorm some more. On the other hand if there are plenty of these online forums around move onto step 3.

3. Show me the money!

Once you’ve found a market of people who share your interest there are a few more things you need to know before taking another step…

a) Do they have a credit card?
b) Are they used to making online purchases.

The reason why you need to ask this is because not everyone has a credit card and is prepared to use it online.

So how do you find out if your niche market has what it takes to buy whatever you plan on selling?

Simply go back to the original search you did on Google. This time look at the advertisements on the right hand side of the page. If you can see plenty of advertisement that’s great! it means that other people are paying money to advertise to your niche market (or the people who share your passion).

If there are few advertisements on your Google search results page, just go back to step 1 and start over.

4. Give ‘em what they want!

Here’s where the fun begins…

You’ve found your niche market, you know they have money to spend, now you need to find out what they want.

What you must do now is get into the “meat” of the matter and find out from the horses mouth exactly what people need, create a product to fill that need, then sell it to them.

How do you do this?

Step 1: Set up what’s called an “Ask Campaign” website.

Step 2: Advertise your “Ask Campaign” website in Google to target your niche market.

5. Words are the true currency

It’s time to get back to “brainstorming” again as this time we need to know what the people in your niche market are searching for, more specifically what words and phrases they’re using.
